Tag: A-Z Book Survey...

Author(s) You’ve Read The Most Books From:
Start with a difficult one! I never keep track of authors... but I think I'd have to say Garth Nix, I've read the Abhorsen Trilogy and almost all of the Keys to the Kingdom series. He really is a fantastic author.

Best Sequel Ever:
Oh dear, I'm better at answering this one for movies... I think I'd have to say Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Although that may be cheating because I honestly can't remember if I've even read that... Don't burn me at the stake for watching those films first!

Currently Reading:
Well... A bit of The Hobbit by Tolkein, A bit of Burn by Daniel Swensen... I juggle books like a circus performer!

Drink of Choice While Reading:
Whatever doesn't involve me getting up and moving... Generally water.

E-reader or Physical Book?
I will never get rid of my physical books, there's nothing quite like holding a good, worn paperback in your hands. However I love my Kindle Fire... The backlight means I can read at night without needing to switch the light on, and the memory means I can carry a whole library in my bag without breaking my back! I've always been one for keeping up to date with technology.

Fictional Character You Probably Would Have Actually Dated In High School:
Fictional character? Does that mean it doesn't have to be in a book? I don't think I had a crush on any characters in the books I read in High School... Games and animes on the other hand... Vincent Valentine of FFVII (I know I'm not the only one!), Kyo of Furuba (Alright... this was young High School) and if I'd played the games and watched the animes I do now I think Dante from Devil May Cry would have to be on this list...
If you were after book characters, sorry to disappoint you. :P

Glad You Gave This Book A Chance:
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. I had to study this at school so I didn't give it a chance to begin with... School ruins so many books, I loved Wuthering Heights until English Literature A Level over analysed it and it wasn't so interesting any more... But Of Mice and Men is beautiful and heartbreaking, if you haven't read it, give it a chance. It's not a long book but I guarantee it'll have you in tears.

Hidden Gem Book:
I would have to say Life of Pi, that book is my favourite ever. I love it! I wasn't sure what I would think and the first half, however philosophical, is a hard slog but it's so worth it. The film was different... it was wonderful and the special effects are the best I've seen but the book is phenomenal.

Important Moment In Your Reading Life:
Um... I don't really have one... I like reading but as for an 'important moment' I really can't think of one...

Just Finished:
I haven't read in a while but according to my kindle, the last book I read was 'Beautiful Chaos' by Gary Russell. It's a Doctor Who novella, and like all Doctor Who novellas it's really short, to be honest I was a little disappointed... All the reviews made it sound brilliant and I love Doctor Who and Donna Noble as a companion was one of my favourites, but this book was something of a disappointment.

Kind of Books You Won’t Read:
I don't really know... I'll give most things a chance. Non-fiction is boring though, reading is a way of escape how can you escape into the world you're already in?

Longest Book You’ve Read:
The last Harry Potter? I think that would have to be it... Unnecessarily long though, JK Rowling is a great author but the way Harry Potter books got longer and longer just seemed a little silly to me.

Major Book Hangover Because Of:
Life of Pi again, it really leaves you wondering...

Number Of Bookcases You Own:
Um... a lot... I don't own them all though, I only own one but it's so chock full of books that they would fit comfortably on two!

One Book You Have Read Multiple Times:
Life of Pi... again...

Preferred Place To Read:
Curled up on the sofa, but only when there's nobody else around... I hate distractions when I'm reading and I really do get distracted too easily.

Quote That Inspires You/Gives You All The Feels From A Book You’ve Read:
"The world is indeed full of peril and in it there are many dark places. But still there is much that is fair. And though in all lands, love is now mingled with grief, it still grows, perhaps, the greater."
The Lord of the Rings ~ JRR Tolkein

Reading Regret:
I don't regret reading anything... If I've read something bad at least I know not to bother reading that again!

Series You Started And Need To Finish:
The Keys of the Kingdom series by Garth Nix, I still need to read the last one!

Three Of Your All-time Favourite Books:
Life of Pi by Yann Martel (You may have guessed)
Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer (They're all brilliant, don't ask which one!)
The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents by Terry Pratchet (I need to read that again...)

Unapologetic Fangirl For:
Not a book, but Doctor Who, I am a hardcore Whovian... There's not much else that I love as much as Doctor Who.

Very Excited For This Release More Than All The Others:
I have no idea of book release dates... so again I'll take this elsewhere to the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special, Season 3 of Sherlock, Catching Fire the movie, Thor: The Dark World, Final Fantasy XV and of course, Elder Scrolls Online!

Worst Bookish Habit:
Reading ahead on the same page... I do that all the time... I really need to break that habit!

X Marks The Spot: Start At The Top Left Of Your Shelf & Pick the 27th Book:
Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli

Your Latest Book Purchase:
Burn by Daniel Swensen. :D

Zzzzz… Last Book That Kept You Up Way Too Late:
... Every book... ever... I just don't like sleeping...

Five Sentence Fiction: Blades

So it's been over a year since I did a FSF, but I had some inspiration so I thought why not?

Life rippled through the trees as the cool air encircled her and toes curled into the green blades beneath her feet.

She threw back her head; tendrils of wind fluttered though her wet lashes and caressed her eyelids as rain mingled with tears.

Filling her lungs with unsullied air she looked into the clouds and sunk to the ground.

Fists clenched and released and fingernails dug into the dirt; her breaths grew shallower as her eyes closed on the deeds the day had held.

The blood on her hands was reflected in the crimson of the evening sky as her body became limp and she collapsed into oblivion.

*Contest Time* Winners!

It's time to announce the winners of my contest. Thank you all so much for entering, I hope to hold more contests in the future!

So just a recap, there were originally three categories but I made a slight change due to the ratio of the entries so we now have only two entries but still three winners: one from the art category and two from the writing category...
1: Art (This includes all kinds of art; photography, makeup, tshirt design)
2: Writing

For the art category:

Thanks for your entry Sarah, I loved this photograph! It makes me wish there was more snow where I live... Haha

For the writing category:

I loved this piece from the moment I first read it, this is the sort of writing I really love to read. I love to see small moments...

He picked again at layers of ice forming on a thin, blue, nylon sleeping bag, still pungent from its previous owner. His recent acquisition offered his only protection from the beautifully, cruel whiteness of this Christmas Eve. Snowflakes clustered around him. He made his Christmas Wish: a new home.

This piece is fantastic for completely different reasons to Sarah's, I loved this because of the wonderful imagery and how you somehow managed to create an entire novel in just 50 words!
And it makes me think of the Silurians...

Beneath the water, rows of ragged sentinels watch the rippled sky. They bare glaucous teeth in the murky dark, hands like cordwood knots gripping spears ending in razor icicles.

They wait unblinking. Civilization unfolds. The human herds propagate.

At last, time.

Damnation creeps from behind a cloud. The future melts.

Please could the three of you email me at with your home address and choice of tshirt (Incuding colour and size) from

Thank you again to all who entered, I loved every entry! :D

Contest Entry: Jules Roberts

Here's a great entry from Jules Roberts entered with three minutes to spare!

"I'm going to jump!"
"Don't be daft. Grandpa's just arrived he'll be upset if you miss him."
"And besides, we don't want you dripping wet through the house. I've just hoovered!"
"I'm not listening, I'm doing it!" And he did,
Crashing through the frozen water.
"That boy never listens."

Contest Entry: Julia Mark

Here are Julia Mark's entries. She's done a great piece of writing and a t-shirt design that I'd love to wear.

Writing Entry:

She walks alone.
Back straight, walking tall.
But still alone.
There is no heat outside her or in.
She turns, briefly. Fixes you with a stare that pierces you to your very core.
Her eyes are made of splintered ice.
And so is her heart.

Contest Entry: Judith Patrick

Here's a great writing entry from Judith Patrick

(With apologies to Dorothy Parker)

"You have a heart of ice" she said.
My heart was heavy.
"Made of lead. You care only
for yourself" she said.
Her heart bled
After a heated exchange
and as her hot tears fell
My heart slowly melted.
"Heartless" was her icy response
as she slid from my arms.
